A New Year
It's like a newborn baby, this new year. Full of promise and potential. No resolutions from me. I will not make this new baby conform to my imposed rules based on the issues with that naughty child of last year. No, I will just watch, and wait, and see what unfolds. Let it be what it was meant to be, and dream of all the possibilities... the first smile, the first giggle, the first wobbly steps. Have a very happy new year.

Fall 2009

Art...what exactly does that mean?  Is it just something nice to look at or listen to? When our son was a little boy of four, I complimented him on how gently he cared for our pets. He told me he was an "artist with animals".  It was true. He loved them with all his heart.

All around me I see people pouring their hearts into their work, their hobbies, their loved ones, and every kind of endeavour under the sun. So why are only a handful of people called artists? Is the way they express themselves in painting or song better than the way other people express themselves? Are some gifts better than others? I don't think so. We need everyone's gifts. Maybe expand our definition of "art appreciation" or change it to "heart appreciation".

So thank you to the civil engineers, my hairdresser, the waitress with a warm greeting, our veterinarian, mechanic, plumber, travel agent, whoever made that great bottle of wine, teachers, writers, pastors, the person I called who gave good customer service, musicians, and all the other people I have neglected to thank for their good and gracious giving of themselves and their gifts to make this life rich.

Summer 2009
Is it enough to paint a pretty picture? To cause the viewer to pause and consider the beauty all around us? To forget the cares of the moment? Is it enough? Can a picture cause a revolution, heal hearts, or bring hope? It is such a small thing I do. I am in such a visual world, and yet it's Hellen Keller, who saw more clearly that it is not the little things each of us can do, but that together we can do so much.

Spring 2009

Springtime, you are such a flirt and a tease.  I've waited so long to feel your warmth.  Finally, a ray of sun, birdsong to start the day, and the next day you're gone again.  A chill returns, and I've been cold for too long.

But I think I see the swelling of buds, life on a branch that looked dead. Please come back. I know you can't stay, but you are so lush, so beautiful, you smell so sweet.  You make my heart race.  I see you winking at me from behind the clouds.  Come out and play.  Don't tease me anymore.

Welcome to the Gallery!

I feel a little like the Anthony Bourdain of the art world.  In our adventures, my husband, Chris, and I start out pursuing  feasts for the eyes, exotic cuisine, and adventure, but also discover a feast for the soul. While there are plenty of beautiful sights, to be sure, it's the encounters with other people that make the most lasting impressions. But since I haven't figured out how to capture that on canvas, I paint what I can.

Who knows where or what the next adventure will be. Keep your eyes and hearts open. Bon Appetite!
